Himalaya, in Sanskrit meaning “the abode of snow”, from hima “snow” and alaya “abode”. Alaya Rugs was founded in New York City in 2005 by Amy Chato with the vision of providing custom designed hand-knotted Tibetan area rugs that have been masterfully crafted using traditional techniques passed on from generation to generation sustaining the ancient culture of Tibet with a modern approach to design.Our rugs are woven by Tibetan refugees living in Nepal, each rug telling a unique story all its own. Our designers are schooled in textile and carpet design. We are continually traveling around the world gathering new inspiration for our designs.
